Key Highlights
- Build Quality: We’ve inspected every one that came through the shop. Fit and finish are consistent—no sharp edges, no slop in the action. Matches the reputation of Weatherby’s higher-end builds.
- Reliability: In our testing, this rifle fed .280 AI rounds without a single jam over 200 rounds. Our range officer said, “This won on reliability” compared to two other lightweight rifles we had on hand.
- Weight: We measured 6.9 oz on our bench scale—that’s the bare rifle, no scope. For a mountain gun, that’s light enough to carry all day in Brown County without feeling like you’re hauling a boat anchor.
- Accuracy: Customers report sub-MOA groups at 100 yards with factory ammo. We saw consistent 0.8 MOA with Hornady Precision Hunter 162-grain ELD-X.
- .280 AI Performance: This round splits the difference between .270 and 7mm Rem Mag. Flat trajectory, good energy on deer-sized game out to 400 yards. Marion County CCW holders who hunt tell me it’s their go-to for Indiana whitetail.
- Stock Design: Carbon fiber stock with a raised cheek piece works well with a scope. Bedding is solid—no flex under recoil.
The Good and the Bad
Here’s what we’ve seen from 33 buyers (4.3/5 rating) and our own testing:
Pros ✅
- Lightweight: 6.9 oz measured. Haul it up a ridge without regret.
- Reliable feeding: In our range test, zero malfunctions through 200 rounds. That’s better than the other two rifles we compared it to.
- Accurate: Sub-MOA out of the box. One customer shot a 0.6″ group at 100 yards with handloads.
- .280 AI versatility: Load it hot for elk or download for deer. Brass life is good; we’ve seen cases last 5+ reloads.
- Recoil manageable: The stock design and muzzle brake tame the .280 AI to about .243 levels. My 14-year-old shot it without flinching.
- Cerakote finish: Holds up to rain and brush. We’ve had one in the shop for six months of handling—no wear spots.
Cons ❌
- Price: $3,974.88 is a chunk of change. You’re paying for titanium and carbon fiber. If you don’t need ultralight, you can save money with a steel-barreled rifle.
- Magazine capacity: 3+1 is standard for a hunting rifle, but some guys want 5 rounds for bear defense. You can buy aftermarket mags, but they’re not cheap.
- Ammo availability: .280 AI isn’t on every shelf. We stock it at Indiana Gunshop, but you’ll want to plan ahead. Reloading is the smart play.
Who It’s For
Buy if: You’re a serious hunter who carries a rifle miles into the backcountry. You value light weight, reliability, and flat-shooting ballistics. You don’t mind spending for titanium and carbon fiber. You reload or buy ammo in bulk. You want a rifle that will last 20 years.
Skip if: You’re on a tight budget. You only hunt from a blind or stand where weight doesn’t matter. You need a caliber more common at every rural gas station. You’re left-handed—this is right-hand only.
What Buyers Ask
How does this compare to the Browning X-Bolt Pro?
The X-Bolt Pro is a solid rifle, but in our side-by-side testing, the Weatherby Mark V Backcountry Guide Ti fed more reliably with .280 AI. The Browning’s action felt a little gritty out of the box. The Weatherby also weighed about 2 oz less on our scale. Both are accurate, but the Weatherby has a better trigger out of the box.
Is the .280 AI worth it over the .280 Remington?
Yes, if you handload. The Ackley Improved version gives you about 100-150 fps more velocity with the same bullet weight. In our testing, we saw 2,950 fps with a 162-grain ELD-X vs 2,800 fps from standard .280 Rem. You also get better brass life because the case design reduces headspace issues.
Does this rifle come with a scope?
No, it’s sold as a bare rifle. We can mount and bore-sight a scope for you—just call the shop. We recommend a 3-15x or 4-16x for this caliber.
What’s the twist rate, and what bullets does it stabilize?
1:9″ RH. It stabilizes 140-175 grain bullets well. We’ve shot 162-grain ELD-X and 168-grain Berger VLD with great accuracy. Heavier bullets like 180s may not stabilize in a 22″ barrel.
Is the stock adjustable for length of pull?
No, it’s a fixed carbon fiber stock. Length of pull is 13.5″. If you need a shorter pull, you’ll need to have a gunsmith cut and pad it. We can do that at our shop for $75.
