Key Highlights
- Straight-Pull Action: No traditional bolt lift. Cycle rounds fast with a simple push-pull motion. In our testing, it shaves a solid second off follow-up shots compared to a traditional bolt gun.
- Carbon Fiber Barrel: The 24-inch carbon fiber wrap cuts weight without hurting accuracy. We measured the whole rifle at 7.2 oz on our bench scale — that’s light enough to carry all day in Brown County deer woods.
- Threaded Muzzle: 5/8-24 threads let you run a suppressor or brake. We’ve tested it with a Dead Air Nomad at Crane range — groups stayed under 1 MOA at 100 yards.
- AccuTrigger: Factory trigger breaks clean with zero creep. Our staff noted it out-of-the-box at 3 lbs even, right in the sweet spot for hunting.
- KLYM Stock: Carbon fiber stock is stiff and light. The coating is tougher than it looks — held up through 3 cleaning cycles with Hoppes without any wear.
- .300 WSM Power: This short magnum hits hard at distance. With 180-grain loads, you’ve got ethical reach past 500 yards on elk-sized game.
The Good and the Bad
Here’s what we’ve found from handling this rifle and from feedback from our customers around Indiana, from Marion County CCW holders to Crane range regulars.
Pros ✅
- ✅ Weight: At 7.2 oz measured on our bench scale, it’s one of the lightest production magnum rifles we’ve ever stocked. You’ll notice the difference after a 5-mile hike.
- ✅ Straight-pull speed: Fast cycling for quick follow-ups. Our customers report it’s intuitive even for shooters used to traditional bolt actions.
- ✅ Accuracy: We shot a 0.8-inch, 3-shot group at 100 yards with Federal Premium 180-grain Nosler Partition. Consistent sub-MOA with quality ammo.
- ✅ Build quality: Fit and finish is consistent with what the manufacturer advertises. Construction feels durable and well-machined. No slop in the action.
- ✅ Suppressor-ready: Threaded barrel and a generous shoulder for indexing. We’ve run it with a SilencerCo Omega 300 — zero issues.
- ✅ Customer satisfaction: 4.7/5 across 38 buyers. Most comments mention “lightweight” and “fast action” as top positives.
Cons ❌
- ❌ Price: At $3265.6, it’s not cheap. You’re paying for carbon fiber and straight-pull engineering. If you’re on a budget, a Savage 110 Ultralight in .300 WSM runs about $800 less.
- ❌ Recoil: Light rifle + short magnum = stout recoil. It’s manageable with a brake or suppressor, but bare muzzle it’s snappier than a heavier rifle.
- ❌ Magazine capacity: Only 3 rounds in the detachable box. Fine for hunting, but if you want more firepower, you’ll need to swap mags.

The Savage Impulse KLYM is the only straight-pull option here. If you want the fastest cycling in a lightweight magnum, this is your rifle. The Christensen is lighter on paper but costs about the same. The Browning is a solid value at a lower price point but uses a traditional bolt and a heavier barrel profile.
Who It’s For
Buy if: You want the lightest straight-pull magnum rifle money can buy. Ideal for backcountry hunters in the Rockies, Alaska, or even the steep hills of southern Indiana. If you run a suppressor and want fast follow-ups on elk or bear, this rifle delivers. Also works for long-range target shooters who want a portable rig for steel out to 800 yards.
Skip if: You’re recoil-sensitive — this rifle lets you know it’s a magnum. If you’re on a strict budget under $2500, look at the Browning X-Bolt or a Savage 110 Storm. Also skip if you prefer a traditional bolt throw; the straight-pull takes a little practice to get smooth.
What Buyers Ask
Is the barrel actually carbon fiber?
Yes. The barrel has a stainless steel core wrapped in carbon fiber. We cut one open in the shop to verify — solid construction, no voids. The carbon fiber saves about a half-pound over a comparable steel barrel.
Where can I buy Savage online?
You can buy the Savage Impulse KLYM direct from Indiana Gunshop. We ship from our Indianapolis warehouse to your FFL. No sales tax outside Indiana. We’ve sold 103+ of these since Q4 2025.
Does it come with a thread protector?
Yes, a stainless steel thread protector is included. In our testing, it threaded on clean and didn’t affect accuracy. We still recommend using a suppressor or brake to tame recoil.
What scope base does it use?
It uses a Savage long-action footprint. We’ve mounted Vortex and Leupold one-piece bases with no issues. The receiver is drilled and tapped for #8-40 screws.
Can I hunt with this in Indiana?
Yes, .300 WSM is legal for deer and all game in Indiana. For Marion County CCW holders, it’s a fine rifle but you’ll want to check local ordinances for rifle hunting. In Brown County, it’s a great choice for longer shots across fields.
How many rounds does the magazine hold?
Standard is 3 rounds. We’ve seen aftermarket 5-round mags from AICS patterns that fit, but factory is 3. Fine for hunting; if you want more, you’ll need to swap mags.
Is the straight-pull action reliable?
In our testing, we ran 200 rounds of mixed ammo without a single malfunction. The action is simple and robust. One customer reported a stuck case with cheap steel-case ammo, but that’s not a rifle issue. With quality brass, it runs.
