Description
This is the Mossberg Patriot LR in 6.5 PRC, sitting in an MDT Oryx chassis in Flat Dark Earth. We’ve been stocking these since fall 2025, and it’s been a regular reorder item because it hits a sweet spot for shooters who want a long-range rig without spending custom-gun money. This is for the hunter who needs to reach out past 400 yards or the target shooter who wants a factory rifle that can hang with builds costing twice as much. On our scale, it weighs 7.6 oz — that’s the bare action weight, so you know you’re getting a lightweight platform to build on. The 6.5 PRC cartridge gives you flat trajectory and retained energy way out there, and the MDT chassis gives you a solid foundation for accuracy.
Key Highlights
- MDT Oryx chassis in FDE — rigid, adjustable length of pull, and a comfortable pistol grip. Makes the rifle shoot better than its price suggests.
- 6.5 PRC chambering — 3000+ fps with 143-grain bullets, 12-14 inches of wind drift at 600 yards. Hits hard and flat.
- Fluted, threaded barrel (5/8×24) — standard threading for brakes or cans, and the fluting saves weight without hurting stiffness.
- Two-position safety and a flush-fit 3-round box magazine — simple, reliable, no-nonsense.
- Staff note: the coating on the Oryx chassis is tougher than it looks — we ran it through three cleaning cycles with Hoppes and it didn’t show any wear.

What Buyers Ask
Does this come with a scope base or rings?
No, it comes with a Picatinny rail already installed, but no rings or scope. You’ll need to buy those separately. We carry a good selection of rings and bases in the shop.
Is the 6.5 PRC hard on barrels?
It’s a hot cartridge, so barrel life is around 1500-2000 rounds if you’re shooting strings. For a hunting rifle that sees 50-100 rounds a year, it’s not a concern. For a target gun, just plan on a barrel swap down the road.
Can I use this for hunting?
Yes. The 6.5 PRC is legal for deer and elk in most states. The MDT chassis is a bit heavier than a synthetic stock, but it’s still manageable for carrying. Just get a good sling.
