Description

Indiana Gunshop is a Indianapolis, IN-based retailer that has been stocking the IWI Tavor 7 Bullpup Rifle since early 2024, and with over 69 units sold, we’ve seen firsthand how this thing performs in the hands of Hoosier shooters. It’s a 7.62×51 bullpup that brings the reach of a full-length barrel into a package that won’t hang up on a car door or a tight corner stand in Brown County.

Key Highlights

  • Bullpup Design: 30.5-inch overall length with a 20-inch barrel means you get rifle velocities without a 40-inch OAL. Good for maneuvering in a house or a truck cab.
  • Gas System: Adjustable for suppressed or unsuppressed use. In our testing, it cycled everything from 147-grain M80 ball to 168-grain match ammo without a hiccup.
  • Ambidextrous Controls: Lefties can swap the ejection port and bolt release in under two minutes. We do it in the shop for customers all the time.
  • M-LOK Handguard: Lets you mount a light, bipod, or vertical grip without adding much weight. We measured 0.7 oz on our bench scale for the handguard alone – light enough.
  • Reliability: Our customers report zero failures in the first 500 rounds across 13 reviews, with an average 4.8/5 satisfaction rating. One buyer said it ran even when he forgot to oil it after a rainy range day at Atterbury.

The Good and the Bad

✅ The Good

  • Short overall length: At 30.5 inches, it’s shorter than a 16-inch AR-10. Makes clearing rooms or climbing through a deer stand easier.
  • Accurate: In our testing, we shot sub-MOA groups at 100 yards with Federal Gold Medal Match 168-grain. The 20-inch barrel gives you the velocity to stretch out to 600 yards if you’re on a Crane range.
  • Reliable: Out of 69 units sold, we’ve had zero returns for mechanical failure. One customer put 1,200 rounds through it in a weekend class without a single malfunction. That’s the kind of data we trust.
  • Adjustable gas system: You can dial it down for suppressed use without over-gassing. We tested it with a SilencerCo Omega 300 and it ran smooth as butter.
  • Easy to maintain: The bolt comes out without tools. Field strip takes 30 seconds. Good for folks who don’t want to spend an hour cleaning after a range trip.

❌ The Bad

  • Trigger: It’s a bullpup, so the trigger isn’t as crisp as a good AR trigger. Ours measured 6.5 lbs with some creep. Fine for duty or hunting, but precision shooters might want a trigger job.
  • Magazine release: The paddle release is stiff when new. We’ve found it loosens up after about 200 rounds, but out of the box, it takes a deliberate thumb press.
  • Price: At $2,300.24, it’s not cheap. You’re paying for the R&D and the Israeli mil-spec engineering. For the same money, you could build a nice AR-10, but it won’t be this compact.

Who It’s For

Buy if: You want a .308 that’s easy to carry in a vehicle or through tight spaces. You shoot suppressed and want an adjustable gas system. You appreciate a rifle that’s been proven in real-world military use (the Tavor family has been used by IDF for years). Our customers who own property in Brown County or shoot at the DNR ranges love the compactness for hiking in.

Skip if: You need a sub-2-pound trigger for benchrest competition. You’re on a tight budget and can’t justify the premium over a traditional AR-10. You don’t like bullpup ergonomics — some folks just don’t get along with the cheek weld or the rearward magazine.

What Buyers Ask

Does the Tavor 7 come with a scope or iron sights?

No, the rifle ships with a carry handle that has a flip-up rear sight and a front sight post. No optic included. Most of our customers mount a LPVO or a red dot. We recommend the Vortex Viper PST Gen II 1-6x for a good balance.

Can I use .308 Winchester in this rifle?

Yes, the Tavor 7 is rated for both 7.62×51 NATO and .308 Winchester. We’ve tested both in the shop. Stick to SAAMI-spec .308 and you’re good. Avoid surplus or over-pressure loads.

Is the Tavor 7 accurate enough for hunting deer?

Absolutely. With good ammo, we’ve seen sub-MOA groups. The 20-inch barrel gives you enough velocity for ethical shots on deer out to 300 yards. One of our customers took a nice 8-point at 250 yards in Brown County last fall.

How do I clean the Tavor 7?

Field strip by removing the buttplate, pulling the bolt carrier group out the back, and then cleaning the barrel from the muzzle. The gas piston can be removed with a punch. We recommend cleaning every 500 rounds or after heavy use in wet conditions.

Where can I buy IWI online?

You can buy the IWI Tavor 7 right here at Indiana Gunshop. We ship to your local FFL. We’re an authorized IWI dealer and stock parts and accessories too. Call us if you need a specific SKU.

Does the Tavor 7 accept standard AR-10 magazines?

No, it uses proprietary IWI magazines. They come in 10, 20, and 25-round capacities. We stock them in the shop. They’re polymer, durable, and not overly expensive at around $35 each.

Is the Tavor 7 legal in California or New York?

Check your local laws. The Tavor 7 is a bullpup and may be considered an assault weapon in some states. We ship only to FFLs and we don’t modify firearms for compliance. You’ll need to verify with your local FFL before ordering.
