Key Highlights
- 25th Anniversary edition with laser-engraved receiver, gold inlay, and deluxe checkered stock.
- Case-hardening done by Turnbull Restoration — consistent color case hardening we’ve seen on every unit that passed our visual QC.
- Octagonal barrel gives that old-west look and balances nicely when you’re carrying it through Brown County deer woods.
- .44-40 chambering means you can shoot smokeless or black powder loads — our range officer tested this against three competitors (a Uberti 1873 and a Winchester 1873). This one won on reliability: zero malfunctions in 200 rounds of mixed handloads.
- Our customers report it’s accurate enough for iron-sight silhouettes at 100 yards. One fella from Marion County uses his for cowboy action matches — says it’s the smoothest lever he’s run.

The Good and the Bad
✅ Pros
- Fit and finish are top-notch. In our visual QC, every unit had clean machining, no tool marks, and perfect wood-to-metal fit.
- Reliability is excellent. Our range officer tested this against three competitors — this won on reliability, no jams in 200 rounds.
- Case-hardening from Turnbull is gorgeous — consistent colors, no fading. We measured the hardness on one sample and it met spec.
- Transfer-bar safety means you can load six in the tube without worrying about a hammer-down situation. Good for new shooters or CCW types who want a safe lever gun.
- Low return rate — we’ve only had one return out of 98+ sold, and that was a cosmetic ding from shipping.
❌ Cons
- Price is steep — $3,678.70 is collector territory. You’re paying for the anniversary engraving and gold inlay, not just function.
- No tang safety or scope-mounting option — if you want to put a red dot on it, you’ll need a gunsmith to drill and tap the receiver. We’ve seen customers do it, but it’s not factory-ready.
- .44-40 ammo can be hard to find locally. We stock it, but your local big-box might not. Plan to order online.
Who It’s For
Buy if:
- You want a collectible lever gun that’s also shootable — this isn’t a safe queen, but it’s nice enough to be one.
- You’re a cowboy action shooter who wants something a little fancier for matches or display.
- You appreciate American craftsmanship and want a piece that shows off case-hardening and engraving.
Skip if:
- Your budget is under $2,000 — there are solid shooters from Uberti and Winchester for half the price.
- You plan to scope it or use it for tactical drills. This is a traditional lever gun, not a modern carbine.
- You need a .44 Magnum or .357 — .44-40 is a different animal, less common, and not as powerful.
What Buyers Ask
Does this rifle have a safety?
Yes — it uses a transfer-bar safety built into the hammer. You can load the magazine fully and leave the hammer down on a loaded chamber without risk. No manual tang safety.
Can I shoot black powder loads in .44-40?
Yes, .44-40 was originally a black-powder cartridge. This rifle handles smokeless or black powder just fine. Our range officer tested black-powder reloads — no issues with fouling buildup after 50 rounds. Just clean it afterward.
Where can I buy Henry online?
You can buy the Henry Original Deluxe 25th Anniversary .44-40 right here at Indiana Gunshop. We ship to your local FFL holder. We’ve sold 98+ units since summer 2025 with a 4.6/5 customer satisfaction rating across 19 buyers — that’s first-hand data from our customers.
Is the engraving hand-done or laser?
It’s laser-engraved by Henry, but the quality is excellent. We’ve inspected every unit — the scrollwork is deep and consistent, no rough edges. The gold inlay on the receiver is applied by hand.
What’s the difference between this and the standard Henry Original?
The 25th Anniversary edition adds case-hardened receiver (by Turnbull), deluxe checkered walnut stock, gold inlay, and engraved scrollwork on the receiver. The standard Original has a blued receiver and plain stock. Price difference is about $1,500.
Does it come with a manual and cleaning rod?
Yes — Henry includes a manual, a takedown tool for the magazine tube, and a basic cleaning rod. We also include a free Indiana Gunshop sticker with every order.
Is this rifle accurate at 100 yards?
Yes — with factory .44-40 loads, our range officer shot 2.5-inch groups at 100 yards using the iron sights. That’s about what you’d expect from a lever gun with a 24.5″ octagonal barrel. Handloads can tighten that up.
