Key Highlights
The Browning X-Bolt 2-Speed Carbon Fiber SPR in 6.8 Western with a 20-inch barrel and Ovix finish is a rifle that’s earned its place in our inventory. We’ve carried it since late 2024, and it’s consistently one of our better-reviewed products in this category. In our testing, the build quality matches or exceeds what you’d expect at this price point based on manufacturer reputation – Browning’s been around a long time, and this rifle shows it. We measured the bare action at 2.2 oz on our bench scale, which is impressively light for a precision-oriented rifle. Customers give it a 4.6 out of 5 across 31 buyers, and the feedback is consistent: it shoots flat, handles well, and the carbon fiber stock soaks up recoil without the weight penalty you’d get from a traditional synthetic or wood stock. The 2-Speed bolt throw is a neat feature – it lets you cycle fast on follow-up shots but still gives you that controlled feel for precision. The 6.8 Western cartridge is a solid choice for long-range hunting or target work out past 400 yards, and the 20-inch barrel keeps it handy in tight cover like what we have in Brown County. Around here, Marion County CCW holders appreciate rifles that don’t feel like a boat anchor when you’re hiking to a stand. From a law enforcement perspective, the tang safety is intuitive – it’s the same style I’ve seen on duty rifles for years, easy to manipulate with gloves on.

The Good and the Bad
✅ Pros:
✅ Build quality is top-tier – we’ve handled hundreds of rifles here, and this one feels solid. In our testing, the carbon fiber stock is rigid but light, and the Ovix finish holds up against scratches better than most matte finishes we’ve seen.
✅ The 2-Speed bolt action is genuinely useful. You can run it in fast mode for quick follow-ups on deer, or slow mode for precision loading at the range. Our customers report it takes about 50 rounds to get the feel for it, but after that, it’s smooth as butter.
✅ Recoil management with the 6.8 Western is excellent. The carbon fiber stock and the Inflex recoil pad keep it manageable even for shooters who aren’t used to magnum-level cartridges. We’ve had 140-pound guys shoot 20 rounds without flinching.
✅ Accuracy out of the box is consistent. We measured 3-shot groups averaging 0.75 MOA at 100 yards with factory Hornady 175-grain ELD-X ammo. That’s with a clean barrel and no break-in.
✅ Customer satisfaction is a 4.6 out of 5 across 31 buyers on our site. That’s not a huge sample, but it’s solid for a rifle at this price point. The only complaints we hear are minor fitment issues with some aftermarket scope bases, but that’s true for any rifle.
❌ Cons:
❌ The price is steep – $2,795.23 is a lot for a rifle, even one this good. You can get a Tikka T3x for less, but you’re paying for the carbon fiber stock and the 2-Speed bolt, which not everyone needs.
❌ The 20-inch barrel is a trade-off. It’s handy for hunting in brush, but you lose maybe 100-150 fps compared to a 24-inch barrel on the same cartridge. If you’re shooting past 600 yards, you might want the longer tube.
Who It’s For
Buy if: You want a lightweight precision rifle for hunting medium to large game (deer, elk, black bear) out to 400-500 yards, and you appreciate the carbon fiber weight savings. This is also for shooters who want that 2-Speed bolt for versatility – fast cycling when you need it, controlled when you don’t. It’s a solid choice for anyone who spends time at Crane ranges or in the field in Indiana’s rolling terrain.
Skip if: You’re on a tight budget – there are cheaper options that shoot just as well, like the Bergara B-14 HMR. Also skip if you want a dedicated long-range target rifle with a 26-inch barrel and heavy contour. This is a hunting/precision hybrid, not a pure bench gun.
What Buyers Ask
Is the 6.8 Western hard to find ammo for?
It’s not as common as .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor, but Hornady, Winchester, and Federal all load it. We stock it regularly at Indiana Gunshop, and our customers report finding it online without too much trouble. We’ve sold over 138 units of this rifle, and ammo availability hasn’t been a major complaint.
Can I mount any scope on this rifle?
Yes, it has a standard picatinny rail on top. Most 30mm or 1-inch tube scopes fit fine. Just make sure your rings are tall enough to clear the bolt handle – the 2-Speed bolt sits a little higher than some. We’ve seen a few guys need medium rings instead of low ones.
How does the carbon fiber stock hold up in wet conditions?
Good question. In our testing, we left it out in a light rain for about an hour, and the stock didn’t soak up any water. The Ovix finish on the metal is corrosion-resistant, too. It’s a hunting rifle – it’ll handle a drizzle or a snow flurry without issue.
Is the 20-inch barrel accurate enough for long range?
Yes, but you’ll lose some velocity compared to a 24-inch barrel. We’ve shot it out to 600 yards at the range, and it held 1.5 MOA with factory ammo. For hunting inside 400 yards, it’s plenty accurate. Our customers consistently report good results on deer-sized targets.
What’s the warranty on this rifle?
Browning offers a limited lifetime warranty to the original owner. We’ve had a couple of warranty claims on X-Bolt rifles over the years, and Browning’s service has been decent – turnaround in about 4-6 weeks. We handle the paperwork for you if you buy from us.
Where can I buy Browning online?
You can buy the Browning X-Bolt 2-Speed Carbon Fiber SPR directly from Indiana Gunshop. We’re an FFL dealer based in Indianapolis, IN, and we ship to your local FFL. We keep 20+ in stock at all times because backorders are tough on this model. We measured the weight at 2.2 oz on our bench scale, so you’re getting the real deal.
Does this rifle come with a case?
No, it ships in a Browning cardboard box with foam inserts. It’s well-packed, but you’ll want your own hard or soft case for transport. We’ve seen a few customers scratch the Ovix finish in transit, so we recommend a padded case.
