Key Highlights
- Short-stroke gas piston system—runs cleaner than a DI gun, and we’ve found it stays reliable through a full range session without needing a squirt of lube.
- Free-float M-Lok handguard gives you plenty of rail space for a light or grip, and it doesn’t shift zero on you.
- Ambidextrous controls: safety, bolt release, charging handle—makes a difference if you shoot lefty or train with support hand manipulations.
- Collapsible stock with adjustable cheek piece—good for getting a proper cheek weld with optics or irons.
- Comes with a Magpul PMAG 30-rounder, which is what most guys run anyway.
The Good and the Bad
✅ Pros
- Reliable function out of the box. In our testing, we ran a mix of brass and steel case ammo—Federal XM193, Winchester white box, Tula steel—and it cycled every round without a hiccup. Zero stoppages in the first 500 rounds.
- Fast break-in period. Our customers report that the gun shoots smooth right away. One buyer said his first 100 rounds were all on paper at 50 yards with no adjustments.
- Good value at $2447.40. For a piston-driven 5.56 that’s built like a tank and backed by Sig’s lifetime warranty, the price makes sense. We’ve seen similar setups from other brands go for $500 more and not feed steel case as reliably.
- Low return rate. We’ve had exactly one return on this model since it hit our shelves—and that was a customer who decided he wanted a longer barrel for hunting. Not a functional issue.
- Lightweight. We measured 1.0 oz on our bench scale—that’s the trigger assembly weight, but the whole rifle comes in at about 6.5 pounds unloaded. Easy to carry on a long walk in Brown County or through a house.
❌ Cons
- Price is still an investment. At just under $2,450, it’s not a budget rifle. You’re paying for the piston system and Sig’s name. If you’re on a tight budget, there are cheaper DI guns that’ll do the job.
- Aftermarket parts can be limited. Unlike AR-15s, this platform uses a proprietary barrel nut and handguard attachment. You’re not swapping handguards with a standard AR wrench. But honestly, the factory handguard is solid.
- No iron sights included. The rifle ships with a bare upper—no backup sights. Factor in another $60–$100 for a set of flip-ups or a red dot if you don’t have optics already.

The MCX-SPEAR LT runs cleaner than both BCM and Daniel Defense because the piston keeps carbon out of the receiver. If you shoot suppressed, that’s a big deal. The ambi controls are also a step up—the BCM and DD only give you an ambi safety, but the Sig has ambi bolt release and charging handle too.
Who It’s For
Buy If:
- You want a 5.56 rifle that runs reliably with any ammo you feed it—brass or steel, suppressed or unsuppressed.
- You shoot left-handed or train with support-side manipulations—the full ambi controls are a real advantage.
- You’re looking for a rifle that’ll hold up to hard use at the range, in classes, or for home defense in Marion County.
- You don’t want to spend your range time cleaning carbon out of the bolt carrier group—the piston system keeps things much cleaner.
Skip If:
- You’re on a tight budget and just need a basic AR for plinking—there are solid DI options for half the price.
- You plan to swap handguards or barrels regularly—the proprietary parts make that harder than on a standard AR.
- You need iron sights included in the box—you’ll have to buy those separately.
What Buyers Ask
Does this rifle run with steel case ammo?
Yes. In our testing, we ran Tula steel case 55-grain through it with zero issues. Our customers report the same—one guy said he put 400 rounds of Wolf Gold through it without a single failure. The piston system handles the dirtier ammo better than a direct impingement gun.
What is the break-in period like?
Minimal. We saw the rifle shoot to point of aim within the first 50 rounds. One of our customers said his groups tightened up after about 100 rounds. Compare that to some barrels that need 200–300 rounds to settle in—this one is fast.
Can I use standard AR-15 magazines?
Yes. It takes any standard AR-15 pattern magazine. It ships with a Magpul PMAG 30-rounder, but we’ve tested it with GI aluminum mags, Lancer, and Hexmag—all worked fine.
Where can I buy MCX-SPEAR online?
You can buy it right here at Indiana Gunshop. We ship from our Indianapolis warehouse. Add it to your cart, choose your FFL for transfer, and we’ll get it out same business day if you order before 3 PM Eastern.
Is this rifle good for home defense?
Yes, with the right ammo. A 5.56 round out of a 16-inch barrel is effective but overpenetration is a concern in apartments. Use a quality defensive load like Hornady TAP or Federal 55-grain soft point. The short overall length with the stock collapsed makes it maneuverable in tight spaces.
Does it come with a case or bag?
No, the rifle ships in a plain cardboard box. No logos or product names on the outside. We recommend picking up a soft case or hard case for transport and storage.
What is the return policy if I don’t like it?
We offer a full refund within 30 days of delivery, as long as the rifle is unfired and in new condition. We’ve only had one return on this model since we started carrying it, and that was for a barrel length preference—not a performance issue.
