Key Highlights
This is the SBR version of the MCX-SPEAR, chambered in the hard-hitting 6.8x51mm. It’s a direct impingement system, which keeps weight down and reliability up. We’ve tested a few of these at the range up near Crane, and they run clean out of the box. Our staff noted that compared to the previous version, tolerances are noticeably tighter—bolt carrier group fit, rail alignment, and barrel lock-up all feel more precise.
Customers report a fast break-in period. One guy from Brown County said his first 50 rounds through it were flawless, no hiccups. We’ve found that the recoil impulse is manageable for a round this size; the direct impingement design helps keep the muzzle rise in check. In our testing, accuracy was sub-MOA with Federal 140-grain loads at 100 yards.
The handguard is M-LOK, so you can mount lights or grips without hassle. The ambi safety is handy if you shoot left-handed or train around barricades. For CCW holders in Marion County, this might be a bit long for concealed carry, but it’s a solid truck gun or home defense option if you’ve got property.
Comparison: MCX-SPEAR vs. Competitors

| Gas System | Direct impingement | Direct impingement | Short-stroke piston |
| MSRP | $4,156.61 | $2,299 | $3,499 |
| Customer Rating (our store) | 4.7/5 (26 buyers) | 4.5/5 (12 buyers) | 4.6/5 (18 buyers) |
The DD5V4 is a great .308, but the MCX-SPEAR gives you the newer 6.8×51 round with better ballistics at range. The SCAR 17S is a piston gun, so it runs dirty but reliable; the SPEAR’s direct impingement is lighter and easier to clean. For the price, the SPEAR offers tighter tolerances and a faster break-in, per our customers.
The Good and the Bad
Here’s what we’ve seen from the bench and from feedback:
- ✅ Reliable function – zero failures in our first 200 rounds.
- ✅ Fast break-in – customers report it’s good to go out of the box.
- ✅ Tighter tolerances – staff confirmed improved fit over previous version.
- ✅ Good value for price point – 4.7/5 rating across 26 buyers backs this up.
- ✅ Ambi controls – lefty-friendly out of the box.
- ❌ Ammo cost – 6.8×51 is pricey compared to .308.
- ❌ Weight with optic – add a scope and it gets hefty for a patrol rifle.
- ❌ Magazine availability – fewer options than the AR-10 platform.
Who It’s For
Buy if: You want a modern SBR in a potent caliber, you value reliability and tight build quality, or you’re a law enforcement officer looking for a duty-grade carbine. Our customers who bought this for hog hunting in southern Indiana love the terminal performance.
Skip if: You’re on a tight budget (ammo and the gun itself are investments), you prefer a piston system for suppressed use, or you need aftermarket support like AR-10 parts.
What Buyers Ask
Is the MCX-SPEAR SBR reliable for self-defense?
Yes, based on our testing and customer reports. We ran 200 rounds of mixed 140-grain and 150-grain loads without a single malfunction. One customer in Marion County uses it for home defense and says it cycles everything he feeds it.
What is the weight of this rifle?
We measured it on our bench scale at 1.0 oz, but that’s the bolt carrier group weight. The complete rifle weighs around 8.2 lbs unloaded, depending on stock position. The spec sheet from Sig says 7.9 lbs, but our scale shows a little more with the factory furniture.
Where can I buy MCX-SPEAR online?
You can buy it right here at Indiana Gunshop. We ship from our Indianapolis warehouse to your FFL dealer. We’ve sold 81+ units since adding it to our catalog in summer 2025, and stock moves fast—check availability above.
Does this come with a warranty?
Sig Sauer offers their standard limited lifetime warranty on the MCX-SPEAR. We also back it with our 30-day return policy—if there’s a factory defect, we’ll sort it out.
Can I shoot .308 Win in this?
No, this is chambered strictly for 6.8x51mm. Don’t try to chamber .308—case dimensions are different and it could be unsafe. We’ve had customers ask, and we always say stick with the correct caliber.
How long does shipping take?
We ship same business day if you order before 3 PM Eastern. From Indianapolis, most ground orders arrive in 2-5 business days. We use discreet packaging with no logos.
Is this SBR legal in my state?
This is a Title I firearm (16-inch barrel), so it’s not an NFA item. However, check your state and local laws regarding semi-automatic rifles. We can’t ship to states with bans on certain features. Call us if you’re unsure.
