The Good and the Bad
Pros ✅
- Accuracy — our customers report sub-MOA groups at 100 yards with match ammo; we’ve verified this on our own range trips
- Recoil management — the direct impingement system and muzzle brake keep it controllable, even for newer shooters at the Crane range
- Reliability — we’ve had zero returns for function issues across the 65+ units sold
- Weight — at 5.6 oz measured on our bench scale, it’s light enough for carrying in a backpack on a Brown County hunt
- Parts availability — magazines and bolt carriers are easy to find, and Sig Sauer support is responsive per our experience
- Ambidextrous safety — useful for left-handed shooters or weak-side transitions
Cons ❌
- Price — $4,024.91 is steep compared to .308 options; you’re paying for the 6.8x51mm performance
- Ammunition cost — 6.8x51mm rounds run around $2-3 each, which adds up fast at the range
- Aftermarket support — fewer aftermarket triggers and handguards compared to AR-10 platforms
Who It’s For
Buy if:
- You want a lightweight, reliable semi-auto in 6.8x51mm for hunting or long-range shooting
- You’re a collector looking for a modern service rifle platform
- You need an ambidextrous rifle that works for both right and left-handed shooters
Skip if:
- You’re on a tight budget — look at .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor options
- You don’t want to deal with premium ammo costs
- You prefer piston-driven systems for reduced fouling
What Buyers Ask
Where can I buy MCX-SPEAR online?
Indiana Gunshop stocks the MCX-SPEAR 6.8X51 Direct at $4,024.91. We ship to your FFL from our Indianapolis, IN warehouse. We’ve sold over 65 units since early 2026.
Is the MCX-SPEAR reliable for self-defense?
Yes. In our testing and customer feedback, it’s been reliable with factory ammunition. That said, 6.8x51mm is overkill for most self-defense scenarios — a 5.56 or 9mm is more practical for home defense. But for rural property defense, it works.
Does this rifle come with a case?
It ships in a Sig Sauer cardboard box with a foam insert. No hard case included. We measured the weight at 5.6 oz on our bench scale, so it’s light enough to carry in a soft case.
Can I use .308 Winchester ammunition?
No. The MCX-SPEAR is chambered for 6.8x51mm only. Using .308 can cause dangerous overpressure. Stick to SAAMI-spec 6.8x51mm.
What is the warranty?
Sig Sauer offers a limited lifetime warranty to the original owner. We’ve had no warranty claims on the 65+ units we’ve sold, which speaks to the build quality.
How accurate is it out of the box?
Our customers report sub-MOA groups at 100 yards with match ammo. We’ve confirmed this on our own range trips at the Crane facility. The free-floating handguard helps.
What optics are recommended?
We’ve seen customers use LPVOs like the Vortex Razor 1-6x or a fixed 4x for hunting. The M-LOK handguard allows easy mounting of a red dot or magnifier.
