Across Indiana, from the hills around Brown County to the flat farm ground up north, hunters spend November in tree stands over cut corn and hardwood edges. Indiana deer rules are specific about rifle cartridges, so check the DNR guide before you choose a caliber for a home-state hunt.

Fierce Firearms built the Mini Rogue family for youth, women and smaller-framed hunters, and it also makes a fine coyote and range rifle. The stock is carbon fiber, the length of pull is shorter, and a push-button cheek piece or adjustable comb lines the eye up with the scope. QD flush cups and an integral bipod rail are built in, and magazines hold 3+1 or 4+1. Prices run from about $1,760 to $2,425.

308 Winchester is the classic all-round hunting round: proven on deer, hogs and black bear, with factory ammunition available everywhere. In a rifle this light, 308 recoil is noticeable for a small shooter; a 6.5 Creedmoor or 7mm-08 is the gentler start.

Second-generation Mini Rogue: TriggerTech trigger, drop box magazine, Fierce C3 carbon barrel and an Arca-Swiss forend, built around the same dual-lug action with a 70-degree bolt throw.

This rifle has a 20 in barrel. Finish: Black / Purple.

A teen who fights a long stock will not shoot well from a tree stand, where space is tight and the angle is steep. Choose the shorter length of pull so the rifle comes up fast and close. Then set the comb so the scope is clear the moment the cheek lands. Begin with 25 or 6mm Creedmoor before stepping to bigger cartridges.
