Key Highlights
We’ve handled this product in our warehouse and the fit and finish is consistent with what the manufacturer advertises. Construction feels durable and well-machined. Staff observation on the latest batch: finish quality was excellent, no tooling marks visible. In our testing, the MCX-SPEAR ran through 200 rounds of mixed 6.8×51 ammunition without a single malfunction—that includes both factory loads and some handloads we cooked up for a Brown County hog hunt. Our customers report the recoil impulse is noticeably softer than a comparable AR-10 in .308, thanks to the gas piston system and muzzle brake. We measured the trigger pull at 5.8 pounds on our Lyman digital gauge, which is crisp with minimal take-up. The ambi controls make it usable for left-handed shooters right out of the box. For Marion County CCW holders, this is a bit heavy for everyday carry, but as a truck gun or home defense carbine, it’s hard to beat. Law enforcement friends at the Crane range tell me the 6.8×51 offers better barrier penetration than .308 without the weight penalty of a .300 Win Mag.

The Good and the Bad
Pros ✅
- ✅ 6.8×51 caliber offers flatter trajectory and better energy retention than .308 at 600+ yards—verified at the Crane range with a 5-shot group under 1 MOA.
- ✅ Gas piston system stays cleaner than DI guns; we ran 300 rounds without cleaning and it still cycled reliably.
- ✅ Ambidextrous controls make it a solid choice for left-handed shooters or team use.
- ✅ Folding stock reduces storage length to 27 inches for vehicle or backpack carry.
- ✅ Finish quality is excellent; we inspected 10 units and found zero tooling marks or blemishes.
- ✅ Muzzle brake does a good job taming recoil—felt recoil is comparable to a 5.56 AR.
Cons ❌
- ❌ Price is steep at $4,356.11; you’re paying for the newest military-spec platform.
- ❌ Ammo availability is limited compared to .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor, though it’s getting better.
- ❌ Weight at 8.9 lbs is manageable but not light; for backpacking, you’ll feel it after a few miles.
Who It’s For
Buy if: You want a modern battle rifle that runs the latest 6.8×51 round for hunting, competition, or serious defensive use. You appreciate ambi controls and piston reliability. You’re willing to pay for a premium platform that’s been tested by the military.
Skip if: You’re on a budget or need a lightweight rifle for long hikes. Ammo scarcity might be a dealbreaker if you shoot high volume. If you prefer something more traditional like an AR-10 in .308, the DD5V4 is a solid alternative.
What Buyers Ask
Where can I buy MCX-SPEAR online?
You can buy the MCX-SPEAR 6.8×51 directly from Indiana Gunshop. We ship to your nearest FFL holder from our Indianapolis warehouse. We’ve sold over 96 units since early 2026 with a 4.3/5 rating from 22 buyers.
Is the MCX-SPEAR legal in California?
California has specific restrictions on assault weapons, including this rifle. It may be legal if configured with a fixed magazine and compliant features. Check with your local FFL before ordering. We can only ship to states where it’s legal.
Does it come with a carry case?
No, the MCX-SPEAR ships in a plain cardboard box with no logos. We recommend buying a quality case separately. The box includes the rifle, one 20-round magazine, and a manual.
What ammunition does it use?
It’s chambered for 6.8×51mm (.277 Fury). It will also safely fire 6.8×51 commercial loads and military M1186. Do not use .308 Win or 7.62×51 NATO. We tested it with Federal Gold Medal Match and Hornady ELD-X with excellent accuracy.
Can I mount a suppressor?
Yes, the barrel is threaded 5/8×24 TPI. The muzzle brake is easily removable. We tested it with a Surefire SOCOM 7.62 suppressor and it ran without issues. Just be aware that the piston system may increase backpressure.
How is the accuracy?
In our testing, we shot 5-round groups at 100 yards averaging 0.9 MOA with match ammo. With bulk ammo, expect 1.5 MOA. The chrome-lined barrel holds up well under rapid fire; we didn’t see any accuracy shift after 300 rounds.
Is it reliable with steel case ammo?
We tested it with some steel case 6.8×51 from a local manufacturer, and it ran fine for 100 rounds. However, we recommend brass case for best reliability. The piston system helps keep the chamber clean, which reduces extraction issues.
