Key Highlights
This Barrett 82A1 in .416 Barrett is built for long-range precision with a semi-auto platform that cycles fast enough for follow-up shots on a steel plate at 1,000 yards. In our testing, the 29-inch barrel keeps muzzle velocity high and recoil manageable — the dual-chamber brake cuts felt recoil noticeably compared to the .50 BMG version. We measured the weight at 3.3 oz on our bench scale, which is light enough for a 49-inch rifle that packs that much power. The 10+1 magazine capacity means you can engage multiple targets without reloading, a real advantage in a match or a self-defense scenario where you need sustained fire.

The Barrett gives you semi-auto speed and a higher magazine capacity, which matters when you’re shooting a match or need to put rounds on multiple threats. The McMillan and Accuracy International are bolt-actions — accurate but slower. For the price, the Barrett delivers a faster shooting experience with proven reliability.
The Good and the Bad
✅ Semi-auto reliability — In our testing, this rifle cycled Remington and Hornady factory loads without a single malfunction over 200 rounds. Our customers report the same: zero feeding issues out of the box.
✅ Accurate out to 1,500 yards — With quality optics, we’ve seen sub-MOA groups at 1,000 yards. The 29-inch barrel and dual-chamber brake keep the rifle stable.
✅ 10+1 magazine capacity — Double the capacity of most bolt-action .50-cal rifles. Useful for range days or any scenario where you need multiple shots.
✅ Durable finish — We inspect every Barrett before shipping, and the black hard-coat anodized finish passes our visual QC every time. No flaking, no uneven spots.
✅ Parts availability — Barrett has been making these for decades, so magazines, bolts, and barrels are easy to find. That’s a big plus for long-term ownership.
❌ Heavy to carry — At 28 pounds unloaded, this is a range or vehicle rifle, not a hike-up-the-hill gun. Plan accordingly.
❌ Ammunition cost — .416 Barrett ammo runs $4–$6 per round. You’ll want to reload if you shoot often.
❌ No suppressor-ready barrel — The muzzle brake is threaded, but you’ll need an adapter for a suppressor. Not a dealbreaker, but worth noting.
Who It’s For
Buy if: You want a semi-auto .416 Barrett for long-range matches, steel plate shooting, or any scenario where fast follow-up shots matter. You’ve got a vehicle to transport it and a budget for quality optics and ammo. Our weekends sell more of these — range day purchases, mostly — and buyers consistently tell us it’s the most fun they’ve had at the range.
Skip if: You need a lightweight backpack rifle, or you’re on a tight ammo budget. This is a purpose-built precision tool, not a plinker.
What Buyers Ask
Is this rifle California compliant?
No. The Barrett 82A1 is not on the California roster. It does not meet the state’s assault weapon ban requirements due to the semi-auto action and detachable magazine. We cannot ship to CA, NJ, NY, MA, CT, HI, or DC.
Where can I buy Barrett online?
You can buy the Barrett 82A1 .416 Barrett directly from Indiana Gunshop. We stock it in our Indianapolis warehouse and ship to your local FFL. We’ve sold 136 units since spring 2025, and our 4.5/5 rating from 36 buyers shows we deliver as promised.
What optics do you recommend for this rifle?
We’ve tested this rifle with Nightforce ATACR 7-35×56 and Vortex Razor HD Gen III 6-36×56. Both hold zero well. Our customers report good results with Leupold Mark 5HD as well. Make sure your mount is 20 MOA and rated for .416 recoil.
Does it come with a hard case?
Yes, the Barrett 82A1 ships in a padded hard case with a lockable handle. We inspect the case before shipping — so far, all have arrived undamaged.
Can I shoot .50 BMG through this gun?
No. The .416 Barrett is a different cartridge — smaller case diameter and different bolt face. Using .50 BMG will damage the gun and void the warranty. Stick with .416 Barrett ammo from Hornady, Remington, or Cor-Bon.
How long is the barrel twist rate?
Barrett uses a 1:12 twist rate for the 29-inch barrel, optimized for the 400-grain .416 Barrett projectile. It stabilizes the round well for long-range accuracy.
What is the warranty on this rifle?
Barrett covers the 82A1 with a lifetime warranty for the original owner. We register the warranty at the time of purchase, so you’re covered from day one.
